What is Real ID?
Real ID is the result of the Real ID Act that was passed in 2005. In essence, this law will change the ID standard for anyone trying to access a commercial airplane, access a federal facility or nuclear power plant.
The deadline is October 1st, 2020. By this date, anyone over 18 WILL NOT be able to pass through security checkpoint at a U.S. airport without the new ID. (This does not apply to children under 18). Also, they will not be able to access a federal facility.
Real ID requirements
In order to obtain a Real ID you would have to visit you local driver license office. You will have to show proof of the following:
- Full legal name
- Date of birth
- Social Security number
- 2 proofs of address
- Lawful status
- (some states may have additional requirements)
What does a Real ID look like
Real ID complaint cards will have a “star” on it like below:
Alternative options
In order to access these federal facilities or a commercial aircraft, you must present a Real ID compliant card. However, below are a few alternatives:
- Passport
- Passport card
- State-issued Enhanced Driver’s License
My Thoughts
I’m honestly not sure how I feel about this new law coming into effect but it’s something we have to deal with. My advise is to not procrastinate and visit your local drivers license office ASAP. I’m actually looking into visiting my local office here soon. Remember October 1st is the deadline. Starting then, you won’t be able to board a commercial airplane with the Non-Real ID driver’s license or a passport. Yes, this does apply to domestic or international flights.
